Overnight, the war entered its most dangerous 24 hours since it began. Iran’s IRGC launched a massive retaliatory campaign following the Larijani assassination: missiles hit 100+ military and security targets in Israel, drones struck a UAE oil facility in Fujairah (Shah gas field operations suspended), Saudi air defences intercepted 6+ drones in the Eastern Province, and an Iranian drone directly hit the US embassy compound in Baghdad. Mojtaba Khamenei said the killers of Larijani “will have to pay for it.” Israel responded by bombing central Beirut and expanding its ground invasion south of the Litani River, planning to strike bridges and crossings today to cut Hezbollah supply lines. 1M+ displaced in Lebanon. On the macro front: Feb PPI came in hot at +0.7% MoM (est +0.3%), YoY at 3.4%, the highest since Feb 2025. Core PPI +0.5% MoM, 3.9% YoY. Producer inflation is running well ahead of the Fed’s comfort zone. The FOMC decision drops at 2:00 PM; Powell presser at 2:30 PM. Futures are down −0.6% on the PPI print + war escalation combination. This is the most consequential trading session of 2026.

War Escalation | Day 19 — Iran’s Retaliation Arrives

🇮🇷 IRAN IRGC — Massive Retaliation: 100+ Targets, UAE + Saudi + US Embassy

The IRGC launched its most significant single-day retaliation since the conflict began. Missiles struck 100+ military and security targets across Israel. Drones struck a UAE oil facility in Fujairah, Shah gas field operations have been suspended. Saudi air defences intercepted 6+ drones in the Eastern Province. An Iranian drone directly hit the US embassy compound in Baghdad. Mojtaba Khamenei stated the killers of Larijani “will have to pay for it.” This is a qualitative escalation: Iran is now targeting US diplomatic facilities directly.

🇮🇱 ISRAEL — Beirut Bombed, Lebanon Invasion Expanding

Israel responded by bombing central Beirut and expanding its ground invasion south of the Litani River. The IDF is planning to strike bridges and crossings today to cut Hezbollah supply lines. 1M+ people are now displaced in Lebanon. The two-front war is intensifying simultaneously rather than sequentially.

Macro Data | PPI Comes in Hot — Worst Possible FOMC Backdrop

PPI is a leading indicator for CPI. +0.7% MoM PPI in February, before the oil shock, means March CPI (releasing April 10) is tracking 3.5–4.0% headline. The inflation picture is now unambiguously worsening.

The Fed cannot cut in this environment. 3.9% core PPI + $106 Brent + a two-front war = zero probability of a rate cut today or at the May meeting. The real risk is the dot plot removing ALL 2026 cuts.

Retail sales pre-oil: +0.28% MoM. February consumer spending was barely positive before the oil shock hit. With gas prices now $4.50+ nationally and Michigan sentiment at 55.5, March retail sales will be ugly.

FOMC Preview | 2:00 PM Today — Updated Post-PPI

Scenario 1: Hawkish Hold (65% probability). Hold rates, dot plot cuts from 2 to 0–1 for 2026, inflation forecast raised to 2.7%+, GDP lowered. Powell acknowledges “supply-side uncertainty.” S&P −1.5–2.0%. 10Y yield +8–12 bps. Dollar rallies hard.

Scenario 2: Neutral Hold (25% probability). Hold rates, dot plot stays at 2 cuts but committee divided (7 for hold, 7 for 1 cut, 5 for 2+). Inflation projection 2.7% unchanged. Powell hedges. S&P flat to −0.5%. Market waits for April CPI.

Scenario 3: Dovish Signal (10% probability). Hold rates, dot plot unchanged at 2 cuts, Powell emphasises growth risks over inflation. S&P +1–1.5%. Virtually impossible after today’s PPI.

Trade Ideas | FOMC Decision Day

▲ HOLD Energy + Defence Into FOMC — Macro Events Don’t Change the Trade

Brent at $106. US Embassy Baghdad just took a drone hit. Gulf energy infrastructure under attack. Whatever the Fed does today, the energy and defence trades are structurally intact. Do not sell energy or defence ahead of the 2:00 PM decision. Position size unchanged.

▼ REDUCE Rate-Sensitive Growth Before 2 PM

Hot PPI + Iranian retaliation = the most bearish possible FOMC setup for growth stocks. TEAM, WDAY, CRM, SMCI face a double compression: (1) the dot plot likely removing cuts and (2) war-driven risk-off. Reduce before the decision. You can always re-enter at lower prices.

▲ MU (Micron) Post-FOMC — AI Demand Is the One Positive Catalyst

Micron reports after the close today (originally scheduled Thursday, moved earlier). AI HBM demand is the single most important data point for the semiconductor complex. A strong beat could partially offset FOMC bearishness. Watch after-hours carefully.

Bottom Line | The Worst Possible FOMC Backdrop

The Fed meets today in what may be the most impossible policy environment since Volcker. On one side: PPI at +0.7% MoM, core at 3.9%, Brent at $106, and producer inflation accelerating before the oil shock even fully hits consumer prices. On the other: a two-front war (Iran + Lebanon), US embassy under drone attack, 1 million displaced in Lebanon, consumer sentiment at 2026 lows (55.5), and an economy showing clear signs of deceleration in the Beige Book and continuing claims. Powell cannot cut, 3.9% core PPI makes that impossible. Powell cannot hike, the economy is already slowing. He can only hold and hope. The dot plot and his language are the only degrees of freedom. If he says “stagflation,” the floor drops. If he says “temporary supply disruption,” the market may not believe him. Position defensively into 2:00 PM. Own energy, gold, defence. Reduce rate-sensitive growth. Do not initiate new positions before the decision. MU and FDX report after the close; that is the next opportunity to act on fundamentals.
