TOP CALL — The Ceasefire Trade Is On

BREAKING — Trump Postpones Iran Strikes for 5 Days, Cites “Very Good” Talks

President Trump announced overnight that the US is postponing planned strikes on Iranian power plants and energy infrastructure for five days, citing “very good” talks with Tehran. He said envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner held talks with a “respected” Iranian leader on Sunday night. Trump stated both sides are keen to “make a deal” and that there are already “major points of agreement.” His chief demand: Iran must give up its enriched uranium stockpile.

CAUTION — Iran Denies Direct Talks. Says Trump Is “Manipulating Markets.”

Iran’s response is skeptical to hostile. Speaker Ghalibaf denied any “negotiations” took place and called Trump’s claims an effort to “manipulate markets” and “escape the quagmire.” Iran’s position: the US announcement is designed to lower energy prices and buy time for military repositioning. This is a critical credibility gap; if Iran doesn’t confirm the talks, the 5-day window may be more of a head-fake than a genuine off-ramp.

Our Take: This is the first genuine ceasefire signal in 24 days of war. Even if Iran is publicly denying talks (expected, they can’t appear to negotiate under fire), the fact that Trump is pausing strikes is material. Markets are pricing in a 30–40% probability of a deal within 5 days. If talks collapse by Friday, we retrace violently. If they hold, this is the bottom for risk assets and the top for oil. Trade accordingly. This is a binary event.

OIL — The 14% Crash Heard Around the World

OIL CRASH — Brent Plunges 14% Intraday, Biggest Drop Since 2020

Brent crude collapsed from $112 (Friday close) to as low as $96 in early Asian trading before recovering to $99–$104 range. This is the largest single-session move since April 2020. WTI followed, dropping 13%. The catalyst: Trump’s 5-day strike pause and ceasefire signal. Treasury Sec. Bessent’s weekend move to lift sanctions on 140M barrels of stranded Iranian oil added supply-side relief.

INDEX EVENT — Coherent, Lumentum, Vertiv, EchoStar Join S&P 500 Effective Today

The quarterly S&P 500 rebalance takes effect before today’s open. Four new additions, three of which are AI infrastructure plays (COHR, LITE, VRT), replace Match Group (MTCH), Molina Healthcare (MOH), Lamb Weston (LW), and Paycom (PAYC). Over $7 trillion is benchmarked to the S&P 500, forcing mechanical passive buying across every index fund and ETF.

Estimated passive inflows: $2–4B combined for COHR and LITE alone. The rebalance effect typically lasts 1–3 trading days as index funds complete their purchases. Today’s volume will be elevated.

WAR SIGNAL TRACKER — Monday Assessment

Signal Detail Bias
Trump rhetoric 5-day strike pause. “Very good talks.” Witkoff/Kushner engaged. First genuine de-escalation signal. BULL
Iran response Denies talks occurred. Ghalibaf calls it “market manipulation.” Public posture remains hawkish. BEAR
Israel / IDF No pause announced by Israel. Lebanon operations continue. IDF not party to US-Iran talks. BEAR
Oil supply Kuwait 730K bpd still offline. Iraq FM in place. But Bessent released 140M barrels of stranded oil. NEUTRAL
Hormuz status No new incidents overnight. The 5-day pause may reduce strait targeting pressure. BULL
Ceasefire odds Market pricing ~30–40%. Real odds uncertain — Iran’s denial creates credibility gap. NEUTRAL
Nuclear talks Trump demands full uranium surrender. Iran unlikely to accept. Hardest issue on the table. BEAR
Pentagon posture Additional Marines still deploying. No drawdown announced. Strikes paused, not cancelled. NEUTRAL
Diplomatic channel Witkoff/Kushner back-channel is new. First confirmed engagement since Larijani assassination. BULL
Weekend violence Iran’s 70th wave hit Arad/Dimona. IRBMs at Diego Garcia. 1,444+ killed. War continues despite talks. BEAR

Assessment: 3 BULL / 4 BEAR / 3 NEUTRAL. A material improvement from last Friday’s 1/7/2 split. The shift is entirely driven by Trump’s strike pause. If Iran confirms talks by Wednesday, this flips to majority BULL. If they don’t, expect rapid re-escalation.

TRADE IDEAS

▲ BUY AIRLINES (DAL, UAL, LUV): Jet Fuel Relief Rally

Jet fuel is airlines’ largest cost after labor. A 14% oil crash translates to ~$2–3B annualized fuel savings for the major carriers combined. These names are down 15–25% since the war started. If ceasefire holds, this is a 20%+ snapback trade. DAL is our top pick on best hedging and premium revenue mix. Risk: Ceasefire talks collapse; oil snaps back to $110+; consumer weakens on stagflation.

▲ HOLD COHR / LITE: Ride the Rebalance, But Don’t Chase

S&P 500 inclusion creates mechanical buying today, but the easy money was made last week (+15%/+12%). Hold existing positions. Do not add at the open, let passive flows complete over 1–3 days and buy any post-inclusion dip. The NVIDIA partnership and OFC tailwinds are structural. Risk: Post-inclusion selling (classic “buy the rumor, sell the news”); broader tech selloff resumes.

▼ REDUCE ENERGY LONGS: Take Profits on Half

If you’re overweight energy (as we recommended all of last week), take profits on half the position today. Oil has dropped $12–16 from Friday’s close. The supply disruptions are real (Kuwait, Iraq, Fujairah), but the ceasefire signal changes the risk/reward. Keep half as a hedge against talks failing. Risk: Ceasefire collapses and oil rips back to $115+; taking profits too early.

▲ BUY MU: Micron Post-Earnings Dip

MU fell 5% after blowout earnings (EPS $12.20 vs $9.31) on classic sell-the-news. Now bouncing +2–3% premarket on risk-on. The Q3 guide ($33.5B rev, $19.15 EPS, 81% GM) is spectacular. Barclays raised to $670. Buy the dip. This is the best AI hardware story in the market. Risk: HBM pricing pressure; DRAM cycle turns; broader tech selloff resumes.

▼ HEDGE SHORT OIL VIA USO PUTS: Ceasefire Binary

If you believe ceasefire talks are real (we assign 30–40%), buy USO April puts. A deal sends Brent to $85–90 within days. The risk/reward on a binary event is asymmetric: ~$15 downside on deal vs ~$5–10 upside on failure (supply constraints cap the rally). Defined risk via options. Risk: Talks fail, Hormuz closure, nuclear escalation, oil spikes to $120+.

BOTTOM LINE

The Most Important 5 Days of the War.

For the first time in 24 days, there is a genuine de-escalation signal. Trump’s 5-day strike pause and claim of “very good talks” has sent Brent crashing 14%, futures surging 3%, and VIX collapsing from 31 to 27. The market is pricing in a real chance of a deal.

But Iran is publicly denying the talks. The credibility gap is enormous. And the demands, full uranium surrender, are maximalist. This could be a head-fake designed to lower oil prices while the Pentagon repositions. Or it could be the beginning of the end. We don’t know.

What we do know: this is a binary week. By Friday, either we have a ceasefire framework and oil at $85–90 with the S&P recovering to 5,800+, or the talks collapse, strikes resume, and we revisit the worst levels of last week. Position for both outcomes. Own the relief trades (airlines, MU, tech) but hedge with oil puts and VIX calls. The next 5 days will define Q2.
