SHFE AL2609's Thursday July 30 day-session close of 23,625 CNY/mt is the confirmed SHFE print on the SMM caliber, quoted +240 (+1.03%) against the prior settlement — versus the July 29 close of 23,455 the move is +170 (+0.72%); volume 209,579 lots, open interest 250,601, −3,175. SHFE alumina AO2609 closed 2,648 (−36, −1.34%) on 381,349 lots with open interest 248,892, −6,152. LME 3M July 30 close $3,194.00 (+0.48%, +$15.40, month +3.12%, year +24.50%) on the TradingEconomics caliber; an alternative vendor caliber prints $3,192.25 (+0.43%) — both carried and agreeing on direction. China spot is the July 30 SMM caliber: A00 Shanghai 23,630 (+230), Foshan/Nanhai 23,740 (+220), Wuxi 23,610 (+220), Hangzhou 23,660 (+230), Chongqing 23,660 (+230). ADC12 national average 24,200 (range 24,100–24,300, +100) on July 30, with East, South, Southwest and Northeast China all 24,200; A380 26,100 (+100), AlSi9Cu3 25,100 (+100), A356 24,100 (+400), A360 24,250 (+250), ZLD102 23,750 (+250), ZLD104 23,850 (+250); Japanese import ADC12 $3,070 and general CIF $3,100, both unchanged. Alumina spot July 30: SMM index 2,707.36 (−0.48); Shandong 2,725 (−10), Henan 2,750 (−10), Shanxi 2,740 (−10), Guizhou 2,775 (−5), Guangxi 2,635 (−5). China aluminum-ingot inventory is the NEW July 30 SMM weekly release: 953 kt, versus 979 kt on July 27, 1,006 kt on July 23 and 1,022 kt on July 20. Billet inventory is also new: 119.5 kt on July 30 versus 122.0 kt on July 27. National alumina inventory 7.028 Mt, +24 kt w/w. LME stock data remains the July 24 report (271,275 mt total, 245,350 mt on-warrant) — no update. The suspected Japanese FX intervention, the dollar index's 0.80% fall to ~100.0 with a 99.87 intraday low, USD/JPY's 2.5% drop to 158.61 from a 157.8 low, the July 30 US data set (Q2 advance GDP +1.5% annualized versus 2.1% expected, June core PCE 3.3% and headline ~3.7%, initial jobless claims 197,000 versus 200,000 expected), the US 'heavy wave' of strikes on dozens of IRGC targets inside Iran, the IRGC strikes on air bases in Jordan and Kuwait, and the July 30 Politburo readout are all confirmed news; the aluminum price impact is labeled interpretation. The spot basis calculation (A00 23,630 against AL2609 23,625, roughly par versus a 55-yuan discount the prior session) is this brief's own computation against the most-traded contract, not SMM's official front-month basis, and is labeled interpretation. Moving-average levels are estimates except where SMM's own read is cited; SMM's July 30 read is that price sits above MA5/MA10/MA30 and below MA60, while a July 29 vendor caliber for the 2608 contract printed MA5 23,415.45 / MA10 23,341.50 / MA20 23,269.66 / MA40 23,257.06 / MA60 23,347.40 — those two calibers are inconsistent and SMM's qualitative July 30 read governs.

  • 支撑看 MA20(~3,181)、其次 MA5(~3,172)与 MA10(~3,158);阻力先看 3,200 硬顶,再看 MA30(~3,220)。

支撑看 23,500,阻力看 MA60(SMM 明示价格仍在其下)与 23,700。

1 · Market Performance

Data SHFE aluminum, most-traded AL2609, Thursday July 30 confirmed day-session close

  • AL2609 closed the July 30 day session at a confirmed 23,625 CNY/mt. SMM quotes the move as +240 (+1.03%), which is measured against the prior session’s settlement price; measured against the July 29 close of 23,455, the move is +170 (+0.72%). Both calibers are shown so the coincidence of two consecutive “+240 / +1.03%” prints is not misread.
  • Volume 209,579 lots (versus 267,105 the prior session, −21.5%); open interest 250,601, down 3,175 on the day.
  • This is the most important positioning turn of the rebound: two straight sessions of rising price on rising open interest ended on the third, flipping to rising price on FALLING open interest. Open interest gained more than 4,000 lots on July 28 and 2,341 on July 29, then shed 3,175 on July 30 — and volume contracted sharply at the same time. A new price high on lower participation is the signature of short covering, not new length (interpretation). This was item 2 on yesterday’s watchlist, and the answer points bearish.
  • Technical structure (SMM caliber, confirmed): 23,625 sits above MA5, MA10 and MA30 but remains below MA60; the MACD gap continues to narrow, indicating strengthening recovery from lows. (Note: a separate vendor caliber for the 2608 contract on July 29 printed MA5 23,415.45, MA10 23,341.50, MA20 23,269.66, MA40 23,257.06 and MA60 23,347.40 — that set is inconsistent with “still below MA60” and appears to be a contract-caliber difference. SMM’s own July 30 read governs here; MA60 is estimated at ~23,600–23,650, meaning price is testing it, not through it.)

Data LME 3-month aluminum, Thursday July 30 confirmed close

  • Confirmed close $3,194.00/mt, +0.48% (+$15.40; TradingEconomics caliber); an alternative vendor caliber prints $3,192.25 (+0.43%) — both carried, and they agree on direction.
  • Up ~3.12% over the past month and ~+24.50% YoY.
  • This is the highest close since the rebound began from the early-July four-month low of $3,085, and it leaves just $6.00 to the $3,200 hard cap. That cap has rejected three rally attempts in July (around July 18, July 25 and July 28). A fourth test is now unavoidable.
  • Structure: the MA20 resistance flagged the prior session (~$3,181.40) has been reclaimed. Estimated MA5 ~$3,172, MA10 ~$3,158, MA20 ~$3,181, MA30 ~$3,220, MA60 ~$3,350 — $3,194.00 is above MA5/MA10/MA20 with ~$26 still to MA30.
  • Support is MA20 (~$3,181), then MA5 (~$3,172) and MA10 (~$3,158); resistance is the $3,200 hard cap, then MA30 (~$3,220).

View Level assessment

  • SHFE has broken out of its July range. The July range was roughly 22,900–23,500; 23,625 clears the top by ~125 and moves the ceiling toward 23,700. But the breakout occurred on falling open interest and shrinking volume, which discounts its reliability.
  • LME is at the absolute high of the rebound and the closest it has come to the cap. What differs from the previous three attempts: this time LME has a Chinese fundamental behind it that has just been confirmed by both spot and billet data, rather than a geopolitical premium alone.
  • The boards remain aligned but SHFE is stronger (SHFE +0.72% on the close-to-close caliber versus LME +0.48%). The strong-inside/weak-outside pattern that appeared on July 28 has returned, consistent with the acceleration in Chinese destocking (interpretation).

Data/latest (SHFE, LME and China spot are all July 30 confirmed calibers)

  • SMM A00 / Shanghai spot ingot: 23,630 CNY/mt, +230 ↑↑ — outpacing futures (+170 on the close caliber), the first clear session of spot leading futures in July.
  • Regional spot (July 30, SMM): Hangzhou 23,660 (+230) ↑; Chongqing 23,660 (+230) ↑; Nanhai/Foshan 23,740 (+220) ↑; Wuxi 23,610 (+220) ↑. Foshan still holds the highest absolute price nationally (23,740), but its daily gain converged from +260 the prior day (60 above the national move) to +220 (10 below it) — on the test this brief set yesterday, Foshan’s outperformance was quote noise and did not persist (interpretation).
  • Spot premium/discount (this brief’s own computation): A00 at 23,630 against AL2609 at 23,625 is roughly par (~+5); the prior session was a ~55 discount — a ~60 narrowing in one day. (This is a computed basis against the most-traded contract, not SMM’s official front-month basis, and is labeled interpretation.) This was the most sensitive falsification test set yesterday, and the answer points bullish.
  • LME aluminum: $3,194.00 (+0.48%, +$15.40) confirmed ↑ (alternative caliber $3,192.25, +0.43%).
  • LME stocks: 271,275 mt (July 24), the lowest in records back to January 1998 ↓; on-warrant 245,350 mt — caliber not updated; still the latest available print.
  • China ingot inventory: 953 kt (July 30, new SMM Thursday print) ↓↓ — a fourth consecutive draw, down another 26 kt from 979 kt on July 27.
  • Billet inventory: 119.5 kt (July 30) ↓ — down 2.5 kt from 122.0 kt on July 27, ending three straight weeks of buildup.
  • ADC12 (secondary alloy, July 30): national average 24,200 CNY/mt (range 24,100–24,300), +100 ↑; East, South, Southwest and Northeast China all 24,200 (+100). Japanese import $3,070 and general import CIF $3,100 both unchanged for a second day ↔ — the domestic market has now risen twice while import offers have not moved at all, closing the import window further at the margin (interpretation). Other alloys: A380 26,100 (+100), AlSi9Cu3 25,100 (+100), A356 24,100 (+400), A360 24,250 (+250), ZLD102 23,750 (+250), ZLD104 23,850 (+250) — A356’s +400 is the largest single-day gain across the complex.
  • Alumina (July 30): futures most-traded AO2609 closed 2,648 CNY/mt, −36 (−1.34%), on 381,349 lots (more than double the prior 188,688) with open interest of 248,892, down a further 6,152 ↓↓; it closed below MA5, MA10, MA30 and MA60 — every major moving average — with the shorter averages now capping. SMM alumina index 2,707.36 (−0.48) ↓; regional spot: Guizhou 2,775 (−5), Henan 2,750 (−10), Shanxi 2,740 (−10), Shandong 2,725 (−10), Guangxi 2,635 (−5).
  • National alumina inventory: 7.028 Mt, +24 kt week-over-week ↑ — a Guangxi ramp-up is expected next week and should build stocks further.
  • Crude (July 30): Brent consolidated near $90 after the prior session’s near-8% surge; WTI ~$83.87 (−0.70%) ↔/↓; crude is on track for its biggest monthly gain since March (~+21% on the month).
  • Dollar index: fell ~0.80% to around 100.0 on July 30, with an intraday low of 99.87 — the weakest since June 17 ↓↓ (prior close 100.92).

View

  • The core of today’s price information is that inventory and spot both confirmed while positioning and cost both refused. Spot +230 against futures +170, a basis moving from a 55 discount back to par, plus a fourth ingot draw and a first billet draw — this is the first time in the rebound that the physical side has confirmed.
  • But alumina’s breakdown is more complete than the previous day’s: July 29 was “up slightly on a heavy position exit”; July 30 is “down 1.34% and through every moving average,” with national stocks building 24 kt and Guangxi ramping next week. The cost floor is not merely failing to follow metal higher — it is actively moving lower while metal rises, and the passive expansion of smelter margins is accelerating (interpretation).

3 · Inventory

Data: new SMM weekly prints for July 30 — the session’s centerpiece

  • China ingot: major-consumption-area electrolytic aluminum ingot inventory fell to 953 kt on July 30, down 26 kt from 979 kt on July 27. Full July path: 1,022 (7/20) → 1,006 (7/23) → 979 (7/27) → 953 (7/30) — four consecutive draws totaling 69 kt. Cumulative drawdown from the early-May peak near 1.465 Mt is ~512 kt.
  • Billet: major-consumption-area social inventory 119.5 kt on July 30, down 2.5 kt from 122.0 kt on July 27. The prior path was 120 (7/20) → 121 (7/23) → 122 (7/27), three straight weeks of buildup; this is the first decline in four weeks.
  • LME stocks: 271,275 mt (July 24) — the lowest in LME records back to January 1998, below August 2022’s 271,450 mt; on-warrant 245,350 mt, the lowest since April 2025; equal to less than one day of global consumption; LME monthly stock-origin reports show Russian metal now makes up the bulk of what remains. July path: ~298,775 mt early July → 278,275 mt (July 22) → 271,275 mt (July 24). Caliber not updated.
  • National alumina inventory: 7.028 Mt, +24 kt w/w — moving in exactly the opposite direction to metal.
  • SHFE aluminum warrants: 395,143 mt on the July 10 weekly caliber, −11,871 mt (−2.92%) vs July 3. (Series lags; trend only.)

View

  • This is the highest-quality inventory print of July, and the reason is billet rather than ingot. For three weeks the combination of “ingot drawing, billet building” posed a single question: was metal actually being absorbed by end-use, or merely shifting from ingot into billet? Billet falling from 122.0 kt to 119.5 kt on July 30 provides the first evidence that metal is now moving out of billet as well — the off-season blockage at the processing stage has begun to clear (interpretation).
  • The floor is double-sided and the Chinese side is still deepening: 953 kt is a new cycle low domestically, 271,275 mt is a multi-decade low offshore. But the two are not equivalent: China is a variable still changing, while the LME is a level that has stopped moving — the LME caliber has not updated since July 24 and its marginal information content is decaying.
  • The one counter-reading is alumina inventory, up 24 kt w/w to 7.028 Mt with Guangxi ramping next week. Metal destocking alongside alumina restocking translates directly into continued smelter-margin expansion, which over the medium term is a driver of supply release rather than a brake on it.

4 · Macro Factors

Data: the dollar — a decline that had nothing to do with the Fed

  • The dollar index fell ~0.80% to around 100.0 on July 30, with an intraday low of 99.87, its weakest since June 17. The prior session closed at 100.92.
  • The trigger was the yen, not the Fed: markets widely suspect intervention by Japanese authorities. USD/JPY dropped as low as 157.8 and last traded 158.61, −2.5% on the day and the yen’s biggest single-day gain since April; traders noted it is “hard to imagine anything other than currency intervention causing a drop of as much as 5 yen in such a short period.” Tokyo has not confirmed any action. Japanese officials have warned of action for months, as currency weakness compounds the cost-of-living impact of soaring energy import prices.
  • View The yen carries roughly a 13.6% weight in the dollar index, so a 2.5% yen appreciation contributes only ~0.34pp mechanically, while DXY fell ~0.80% — meaning dollar weakness on the day extended beyond the yen alone. Even so, the driver was a one-off FX-market event rather than a change in US rate expectations, which makes this a low-information-quality dollar tailwind for aluminum.
  • Rate expectations did not soften: CME FedWatch puts a September 16 hike at ~79.5%–81%, a hold at ~19%–20.5%, and a cut at 0% — essentially unchanged from the post-FOMC pricing on July 29. The dollar fell without any retreat in hike expectations; the two have diverged.
Meeting Hold Hike ≥25bp Cut
July 29 (done) Actual: hold 3.50–3.75%, 9–3 — —
September 16 ~19%–20.5% ~79.5%–81% 0%

Data: US releases on July 30 — growth missed, inflation still high, labor still tight

  • Q2 real GDP grew at a 1.5% annualized rate in the advance estimate, below the 2.1% consensus and below Q1’s 2.1% (Bureau of Economic Analysis, released July 30). Consumer spending, investment and exports all contributed, offset by a decline in government outlays.
  • June core PCE was 3.3% YoY, down 0.1pp from 3.4% and in line with expectations; headline PCE was ~3.7% YoY.
  • Weekly initial jobless claims came in at 197,000, below the 200,000 expected — the labor market has not loosened.
  • View This is a stagflationary combination: weakening growth, inflation still well above target, and employment that refuses to soften. It explains two things at once: first, why dollar weakness on the day extended beyond the yen — a sizeable GDP miss is the fundamental source of the broader selling; and second, why hike expectations did not retreat alongside it — core PCE at 3.3% is still far from 2%, and the labor data gave the Fed no reason to ease. For aluminum the direction is two-sided: weaker US growth weighs on end-demand expectations (bearish), a weaker dollar lifts dollar-denominated metal (bullish), and sticky inflation keeps the September hike threat suspended overhead (bearish).

Data: geopolitics — the US “heavy wave” of retaliation landed

  • On July 30 the US military completed a “heavy wave” of retaliatory strikes on Iran, in response to Iran’s earlier missile attack on the US base in Jordan. Targets were dozens of IRGC sites inside Iran, including military command centers, missile and drone facilities, coastal surveillance and defense sites, and maritime capabilities.
  • The IRGC subsequently said it had struck air bases in Jordan and Kuwait, describing this as a response to US strikes on residential areas of Iran. Jordan’s military said it shot down five Iranian missiles.
  • Saudi Arabia and Iraq have been drawn further in: Riyadh joined the US this week in striking Iran-backed militias in Iraq after attacks on Saudi oil facilities. The war is now in its fifth month and spreading across the region.
  • Crude reaction: Brent consolidated near $90 after the prior session’s +7.9%; WTI ~$83.87 (−0.70%); crude is set for its largest monthly gain since March (~+21% on the month).
  • View The target list deserves separate attention: “coastal surveillance and defense sites” and “maritime capabilities” go directly to Iran’s ability to close Hormuz. Near-term this is escalation and supports the risk premium; but if the US systematically degrades Iran’s maritime denial capability, the medium-term probability of an actual closure falls — a target selection that is directionally bullish short-term and bearish longer-term.

Data: China — the July 30 Politburo meeting

  • The meeting decided to convene the Fifth Plenum of the 20th Central Committee in Beijing in October, to take up the 15th Five-Year Plan recommendations.
  • On H1: growth was “stable with progress and better than expected,” with new gains in high-quality development and an economy showing “momentum shifting to the new, structure shifting to the better”; at the same time officials must “attach great importance to the difficulties and challenges in economic operation, hold firm confidence and press ahead.”
  • H2 policy tone: implement a “more proactive fiscal policy” and a “moderately loose monetary policy,” fully leverage the effectiveness of existing policies, plan and roll out pragmatic and effective incremental policies in a timely manner, step up counter-cyclical adjustment, and intensify efforts to expand domestic demand and optimize supply.
  • Backdrop: Q2 GDP +4.3% YoY (Q1 5.0%, H1 +4.7%); June exports +27%, manufacturing PMI 50.3; property investment ~−18%; LPR unchanged (1Y 3.00% / 5Y 3.50%).

View: impact on aluminum

  • Bullish: the dollar down ~0.80% to ~100.0 with a 99.87 low (a weaker numeraire lifts dollar metal directly); the Politburo’s return to “step up counter-cyclical adjustment,” “intensify efforts to expand domestic demand” and explicit timely incremental policy is a marginal improvement in domestic demand expectations; the US “heavy wave” and Iran’s counter-strikes on Jordan and Kuwait widen the conflict and push the timetable for ~2 Mt of Gulf supply further out; crude up ~21% on the month lifts ex-China smelting and freight costs; a fourth Chinese ingot draw to 953 kt and the first billet draw in four weeks.
  • Bearish: the dollar’s decline came from suspected Japanese intervention plus a Q2 GDP advance miss at 1.5%, not from a Fed pivot — September hike odds remain ~79.5%–81% with core PCE at 3.3%, so the dollar and rate expectations have diverged, and this kind of dollar weakness is less durable than a fundamentally driven decline; the growth miss itself also weighs on aluminum end-demand expectations (interpretation); alumina broke through every moving average with national stocks +24 kt w/w and Guangxi ramping next week — the cost floor is actively moving lower; SHFE rose on falling open interest and shrinking volume, so positioning does not confirm; the Indonesian and Chinese supply offset has not paused; Q2 GDP 4.3% and property −18%.
  • Net: for the first time in this rebound, Chinese fundamentals (inventory plus spot) confirmed the price move in the same direction — the highest-quality bullish input of the cycle; but the dollar leg of the bull case is diluted by the fact that it came from a yen event, while cost and positioning both explicitly refuse to confirm. That frames the fourth test of $3,200 as a contest between newly confirmed Chinese fundamentals and an unchanged ex-China supply offset, rather than a purely macro trade.

5 · Fundamentals

Data/carried forward: ex-China regional premiums remain elevated

Region Premium Note
Japan MJP (Q3) ~395 USD/mt +43.5 USD Q-o-Q, decade highs
Europe P1020A (duty-paid) ~547.5 USD/mt ~+62% YTD
US Midwest DDP ~110.5¢/lb (~2,435 USD/mt) ~+18% YTD
  • Ex-China supply: damaged Gulf smelters have cumulatively stripped roughly 2 million tonnes from global supply (pre-war Gulf exports were ~9% of global aluminum consumption); the July 30 US strikes on Iranian coastal surveillance, defense and maritime capabilities, together with Iran’s counter-strikes on air bases in Jordan and Kuwait, widen the conflict further and push the timetable for Gulf metal’s return out again (interpretation). Middle East gas shortages continue to lift operating costs at European and Asian smelters, and crude up ~21% on the month raises ex-China smelting and freight costs directly.
  • The supply offset (not paused — still the structural explanation for the cap): Indonesia’s primary exports rose from 155 kt (2024) to 511 kt (2025) and a further +58% YoY in January–May 2026; up to 11 new smelters are planned with combined capacity near 13 Mt/yr; Hua Chin (480 kt/yr) has ramped and Alamtri Resources Indonesia shipped first exports in June; the Kaltara project plans to reach full phase-one capacity of 500 kt/yr by October 2026; Vietnam’s Dak Nong phase one (150 kt/yr) started in Q2 2026. Indonesia’s Inalum has called on the government to temporarily halt approvals for new alumina refinery and smelter projects, warning aluminum could follow nickel, where over-expansion drove prices down.
  • Domestic supply: operating capacity ~45.31 Mt/yr (pressing the 45 Mt policy ceiling; installed ~46.1–46.3 Mt), utilization near 99%, liquid-aluminum share ~77.2%; May semis exports 595 kt, the highest since November 2024.
  • Alumina: operating capacity ~96.2 Mt/yr at ~78% utilization, output growing ~8% and outpacing metal → the surplus persists and is worsening; AO2609 fell 1.34% to 2,648 on July 30, closing below every major moving average, on volume that doubled to 381,349 lots with open interest down a further 6,152; national alumina inventory rose 24 kt w/w to 7.028 Mt; SMM explicitly notes a Guangxi ramp-up expected next week that should build stocks further. On bauxite, Guinea’s export controls are the medium-term variable (the 150 Mt/yr ceiling under discussion would remove ~33 Mt/yr), and Indonesia faces its own bauxite deficit risk.
  • Downstream: the high-temperature off-season continues, with the leading processor operating rate ~61.3%; but billet inventory fell for the first time in four weeks (122.0 → 119.5 kt), the only substantive positive evidence on the demand side this week (interpretation); exports remain the bright spot (June exports +27%, May semis 595 kt); PV, grid and auto steady; construction and property weak (property investment −18%); packaging steady; the Politburo’s “intensify efforts to expand domestic demand” provides policy-side support for Q4 demand expectations.
  • Spot sentiment: on July 30 spot gained more (+230) than futures did on the close caliber (+170), taking the basis from a discount back to par; seller reluctance and buyer acceptance improved together, a clear step up from the prior session’s “followed but did not chase” (interpretation).

View

  • Today produced the first genuinely new bullish fundamental of this rebound, and it came from domestic demand rather than ex-China supply: the billet draw. Every prior bullish input — geopolitics, the dollar, low LME stocks — acted on the external conditions around price; billet turning lower acts on the physical flow inside the chain.
  • On the same day, however, the cost-side deterioration accelerated: alumina through all moving averages, national stocks +24 kt w/w, Guangxi ramping next week. Metal up and alumina down means smelter margins are expanding faster. Beneath the 45 Mt ceiling that will not translate into new Chinese output immediately, but it does keep raising the incentive to commission capacity offshore — which strengthens the very “Indonesian offset” that caps price.

6 · Primary Aluminum Spot Market

Data/latest (July 30, SMM caliber)

  • Overall: spot rose across the board and outpaced futures — spot +220 to +230 versus futures +170 on the close caliber; the basis moved from a ~55 discount the prior session back to roughly par with the most-traded contract (computed caliber). This is the first session in July in which spot actively closed the discount.
  • East China: Shanghai 23,630 (+230), Wuxi 23,610 (+220), Hangzhou 23,660 (+230); with ingot inventory down to 953 kt, tightening circulating supply in East China is the direct cause of the basis convergence (interpretation).
  • South China: Nanhai/Foshan 23,740 (+220) — still the highest absolute price nationally, but its daily gain converged from 60 above the national move to 10 below it. On the test set yesterday, Foshan’s outperformance did not persist and should be classified as short-lived quote noise rather than structural tightness.
  • Southwest / other: Chongqing 23,660 (+230), tied with Hangzhou for the largest gain nationally.
  • Secondary: ADC12 national average 24,200 (+100), with East, South, Southwest and Northeast China all at the same level; A356’s +400 to 24,100 is the largest single-day gain in the complex, with A360, ZLD102 and ZLD104 all +250; Japanese import $3,070 and general CIF $3,100 unchanged for a second straight session — the domestic-import spread keeps narrowing passively and the import window is closing at the margin (interpretation).

View

  • The key physical reading today is a shift from “following” to “leading.” On July 29 spot lagged futures by 40 and the discount widened passively; on July 30 spot led futures by 60 and the discount closed to par. That reversal landed on the same day as the twin declines in ingot (953 kt) and billet (119.5 kt), and the three pieces of evidence corroborate one another.
  • The over-reading to guard against: a 60-yuan basis convergence in one session can contain month-end delivery and roll effects. Test to apply: on the first trading day of August, can the basis hold par or move to a premium without futures pulling back? A move to premium confirms genuine Chinese physical tightness; a quick return to discount marks July 30 as a month-end technical convergence.
  • The secondary-alloy signal is cleaner: ADC12 has risen two sessions running while import offers have not moved at all, indicating the increase comes from domestic scrap tightness and just-in-time demand rather than imported cost push.

7 · Key Price Drivers

Bullish

  • Chinese destocking accelerated and was confirmed downstream for the first time: ingot 953 kt (July 30), a fourth consecutive draw of 26 kt, ~512 kt off the May peak; billet 119.5 kt, the first decline in four weeks (122.0 → 119.5) — the “ingot drawing, billet building” contradiction resolved on the bullish side for the first time.
  • Spot confirmed actively: A00 +230 to 23,630, outpacing futures’ +170 on the close caliber; the basis narrowed from a ~55 discount to roughly par (computed caliber) — the first such session in July.
  • A materially weaker dollar: DXY ~0.80% lower to around 100.0 with a 99.87 intraday low, the weakest since June 17; the yen appreciated 2.5% in a day on suspected Japanese intervention.
  • The conflict widened: the US completed a “heavy wave” of strikes on dozens of IRGC targets inside Iran (missile and drone facilities, coastal surveillance and defense sites, maritime capabilities); Iran struck air bases in Jordan and Kuwait; Saudi Arabia and Iraq are drawn further in, with the war now in its fifth month. The timetable for the ~2 Mt of Gulf supply keeps moving out; crude is up ~21% on the month, its biggest monthly gain since March.
  • The ex-China inventory floor: LME stocks 271,275 mt (July 24), the lowest since January 1998, on-warrant 245,350 mt the lowest since April 2025, under one day of global consumption; Russian metal now the bulk of what remains.
  • A warmer policy tone: the July 30 Politburo meeting set out “more proactive fiscal policy plus moderately loose monetary policy,” “step up counter-cyclical adjustment,” “intensify efforts to expand domestic demand” and timely incremental policy; the Fifth Plenum is set for October to take up the 15th Five-Year Plan recommendations.

Bearish

  • Positioning explicitly refuses to confirm: SHFE rose on falling open interest and shrinking volume — open interest −3,175 to 250,601 and volume −21.5% to 209,579 lots, ending two straight sessions of rising price on rising open interest; a new price high on lower participation is short covering, not new length.
  • The cost side is collapsing faster: AO2609 −1.34% to 2,648, through MA5, MA10, MA30 and MA60 — every major moving average; SMM alumina index 2,707.36 (−0.48) with regional spot down 5–10 across the board; national alumina inventory +24 kt w/w to 7.028 Mt and a Guangxi ramp-up due next week. Metal up and cost down means smelter-margin expansion is accelerating.
  • Half the dollar’s decline came from an FX event: the suspected Japanese intervention was the immediate trigger, with the rest attributable to the Q2 GDP advance miss at 1.5%; but CME FedWatch still shows a September hike at ~79.5%–81%, a hold at just ~19%–20.5% and a cut at 0%. The dollar and rate expectations have diverged, and that divergence is more likely to close via a dollar recovery than via a retreat in hike pricing.
  • Weaker US growth itself weighs on aluminum end-demand expectations: Q2 GDP advance at a 1.5% annualized rate, below the 2.1% consensus and Q1’s 2.1%, while June core PCE was still 3.3% and jobless claims came in at 197,000 — growth decelerating alongside sticky inflation and a tight labor market gives the Fed no reason to pivot.
  • The supply offset has not paused: Indonesian primary exports +58% YoY in Jan–May, 11 planned smelters at ~13 Mt/yr (Hua Chin 480 kt ramped, Kaltara phase-one 500 kt targeted for October, Vietnam’s Dak Nong 150 kt); China at ~99% utilization with May semis exports of 595 kt. This is the structural reason $3,200 has failed three times, and this week’s escalation has not changed it.
  • The demand base is still weak: high-temperature off-season with the leading processor operating rate ~61.3%; Q2 GDP +4.3%, the weakest in three years, and property investment −18%; billet turned lower but only by 2.5 kt — one weekly print is not yet a trend.

8 · One-Sentence Market View

For the first time in this rebound the move earned domestic confirmation from both inventory and spot — SMM’s Thursday print cut China ingot inventory to 953 kt (a fourth consecutive draw, −26 kt, ~512 kt off the May peak), and more importantly billet fell from 122.0 kt to 119.5 kt, ending three straight weeks of buildup and resolving the “ingot drawing, billet building” contradiction on the bullish side; spot A00 gained 230 to 23,630, outpacing futures’ +170 and taking the basis from a ~55 discount back to roughly par — which, alongside a dollar that fell 0.80% to around 100.0 (low 99.87, weakest since June 17) as the yen surged on suspected Japanese intervention, a US “heavy wave” of strikes on dozens of IRGC targets inside Iran, and a Politburo readout calling for stepped-up counter-cyclical adjustment and expanded domestic demand, carried SHFE AL2609 to 23,625 (+240 / +1.03% on the settlement caliber, +170 / +0.72% on the close caliber) and LME 3M to $3,194.00 (+0.48%), the highest close of the rebound and just $6 below the $3,200 hard cap, making a fourth test unavoidable; but two refusals are equally clear: SHFE rose on 3,175 lots of open-interest liquidation and 21.5% lighter volume, which is short covering rather than new length; alumina fell 1.34% to 2,648 and lost every major moving average, with national stocks building 24 kt to 7.028 Mt and Guangxi ramping next week, so the cost floor is moving lower while metal moves higher; and the dollar’s decline came from a one-off FX event plus a Q2 GDP advance miss at 1.5% rather than any change in rate expectations — a September hike is still priced at ~79.5%–81% with core PCE at 3.3%, and the growth miss itself weighs on end-demand; support is 23,500 and MA5 (~23,420) on SHFE and MA20 (~$3,181) and MA5 (~$3,172) on LME, with resistance at MA60 (which SMM explicitly notes price is still below) and 23,700 on SHFE and the $3,200 hard cap then MA30 (~$3,220) on LME.

9 · Watchlist for Today’s Day and Night Sessions

  1. LME’s fourth test of $3,200 (today’s main event): the close at $3,194.00 leaves just $6 to the cap. This is the only approach in the cycle backed by Chinese inventory and spot data that have already confirmed. Clearing and holding $3,200 would mean the geopolitical premium plus Chinese destocking has finally overpowered the Indonesian supply offset; another rejection confirms $3,200 as the structural ceiling of this cycle. Support below: MA20 (~$3,181), MA5 (~$3,172), MA10 (~$3,158).
  2. SHFE AL2609 open interest (the single most important falsification test): July 30 closed at 23,625 on 3,175 lots of liquidation and 21.5% lighter volume. If the night session extends higher while open interest keeps falling, this advance is confirmed as short covering and the upside is limited; a return to rising price on rising open interest would mark new length coming back and raise the odds of clearing MA60. Support 23,500; resistance MA60 (SMM explicitly notes price is still below it) and 23,700.
  3. Whether alumina can stop falling (the only cost-side variable): AO2609 has lost every major moving average at 2,648; watch whether it can reclaim 2,680, and whether the Guangxi ramp-up starts on schedule. If alumina keeps falling while aluminum keeps rising, accelerating margin expansion will reinforce the incentive to commission capacity offshore and, indirectly, the cap at $3,200.
  4. Whether the basis holds par (the renewal test on physical confirmation): July 30 took the basis from a ~55 discount to roughly par (computed caliber). Be alert to the month-end delivery and roll component — if the first trading day of August holds par or moves to a premium without futures pulling back, Chinese physical tightness is real; a quick return to discount would reclassify July 30’s convergence as technical.
  5. The dollar index and the 99.87 level: July 30 printed a 99.87 low, the weakest since June 17, driven by the suspected Japanese intervention plus a Q2 GDP advance miss at 1.5%. Watch whether Japanese authorities formally confirm intervention, and whether the dollar re-firms with a September hike still priced at ~79.5%–81% and core PCE still at 3.3%. If the divergence between the dollar and rate expectations closes, it is more likely to close via a dollar recovery than via a retreat in hike pricing; next week’s US employment and ISM data are the next test.
  6. The next round of the escalation cycle: the scope of Iran’s response to the US “heavy wave” (already extended to Jordan and Kuwait), Hormuz transit status, and whether the US continues to target Iran’s maritime denial capability; whether Brent can hold the $90 line.
  7. The next inventory and industry prints: whether Monday’s (August 3) SMM weekly ingot print extends below 953 kt and whether the billet draw continues (2.5 kt in one week is not yet a trend); also watch the pace of accumulation in national alumina stocks above 7.028 Mt.
  8. The pace of Chinese policy delivery: the specific form and timing of the “pragmatic and effective incremental policies” flagged by the Politburo, and whether August manufacturing PMI and export data validate the “intensify efforts to expand domestic demand” language.

Data calibers: the SHFE most-traded contract is AL2609 and its July 30 day-session close of 23,625 is the latest confirmed print; SMM’s quoted +240 (+1.03%) is measured against the prior settlement, while against the July 29 close of 23,455 the move is +170 (+0.72%) — both are shown so that the coincidence of two consecutive “+240 / +1.03%” prints is not misread; LME’s July 30 close carries two vendor calibers ($3,194.00 and $3,192.25), both shown; the spot basis (A00 at par with the most-traded contract, versus a ~55 discount the prior session) is this brief’s own computation, not SMM’s official front-month basis, and is labeled interpretation; LME stocks remain the July 24 report caliber, with no July 30 update, and the marginal information content of that series is decaying; China ingot and billet inventories are both new July 30 SMM weekly prints; SHFE warrants are the July 10 weekly caliber and lag; moving-average levels are estimates except for SMM’s own read (above MA5/MA10/MA30, still below MA60), and a separate vendor caliber for the 2608 contract on July 29 (MA5 23,415.45 / MA10 23,341.50 / MA20 23,269.66 / MA40 23,257.06 / MA60 23,347.40) is inconsistent with that read and appears to be a contract-caliber difference — SMM’s July 30 read governs; FedWatch probabilities differ across snapshots, so both the 79.5% and 81% readings are shown; there is no single agreed closing print for the dollar index on the day, so it is expressed as “around 100.0, down ~0.80%, with a 99.87 intraday low”; the Japanese intervention is a market inference and has not been confirmed by Tokyo; ex-China premiums, Indonesian and Chinese supply figures and the Macquarie deficit forecast are carried-forward calibers; the suspected yen intervention, the US strikes on Iran, Iran’s counter-strikes and the Politburo readout are confirmed news, with the aluminum price impact labeled interpretation. Confirmed data and market interpretation are labeled separately throughout.
